THE STORY OF OWR

OWR (Oxfordshire Wildlife Rescue) started life in the family home of the charity founders Luke & Ruth. Working with the local vet, they would often be called to help nurse the occasional injured wild bird or animal, no more than a dozen or so a year.  For them, it was nothing more than a hobby.

The word soon spread. The word being, a couple in a suburban house in Didcot helped sick and injured wildlife. Eventually, there would be a small queue of people every morning , cradling the next cardboard box containing their next patient.

Come the summer of 2018, life as they both knew it would soon be turned upside down. Their home had become a full on wildlife rescue. In every corner of their home, would they be sharing the space with their patients.

From a log cabin nicknamed 'The hosprickle' in the garden housing multiple recovering hedgehogs, ducklings in the bathroom, their kitchen sectioned of acting as a ICU... the pair made do, but the idea of what was needed was soon to become apparent.

With the help of only a handful but dedicated of volunteers, over 1500 sick and injured birds and animals were helped during 2018. Bringing forward Lukes idea, that Oxfordshire was indeed missing something very important...

A dedicated wildlife hospital with full onsite veterinary and rehabilitation facilities.

Over the years, the charity has been building up its army of dedicated volunteers, its specialist facilities, techniques and protocols to help nurse over 200 different species of wild animals and birds. Today, the charity is still small, however, it holds a strong team of talented and dedicated members. Boasting an impressive success rate of over 80% regarding its rescue and release rate of viable patients.

Now, the charity is currently in the process of purchasing a piece of land located in the south of Oxfordshire. This is where the charity wishes to give Oxfordshire its very own dedicated wildlife hospital.

As for the founders. Both Luke and Ruth are still currently involved with the charity and its operations to this very day.
